Here is my 46 gallon planted tank. The nitrate levels produced by the cichlids are mostly taken care of by the plants. Weekly water test with API Freshwater Master test kit reads less than 20ppm NO3 and 5ppm Ammonia. Replenish water weekly. Clean filters weekly.

Livestock:
3 red parrot cichlid. 7 inches, 6 inches. 5 inches.
1 sail fin pleco (temporary) 6 inches.
1 bristle nose pleco. 5 inches
5 Chinese algae eater. 3 inches each
15 Otto cats. 1.5 inches.
15 nerite snails.

Plants:
5 water wisteria
4 vivpara
4 hornwort
4 moneywort
3 sunset rosanverig
1 amazing sword
1 Java fern
1 radican sword
Water Vertebrate Plant Fish supply Blue

And a lot of unidentified stuff...

Equipment:
Two 185 watts LED grow lights. 12 hours
2.5 lbs CO2 tank with 1 diffuser. 10 hours.
1 airpump on during day
Additional air pump during night.
1 fluval U2 (swapped along for bio)
1 fluval US (swapped along for bio)
1 marineland water floss (loaded with bio)
1 aqueon power head with sponge filter
1 eheim surface skimmer (cleaned daily)
Mixture of pea size and pecan sized gravel for substrate.

When did you start the tank?

Ammonia and nitrite should be 0, any reading could be dangerous.

Also cleaning filters too often could be a problem.
I know some people are very particular about that(cleanliness), but you could go months and it would be healthy tank as long as nitrates are manageable.

Weekly water changes (30-50%) sure, weekly filter cleaning is debatable.

The tank has been running for 5 years now. The nitrate levels have pretty much been at that level.

I clean the filter that often because the filters are really small, and the sludge builds up quick. And also mainly to remove solid waste.
