I thought my strawberry conch died a year ago, checked and the shell was empty, hasn't moved. Bought a new one and today I noticed another 'mouth' extending from the rock right where the last conch died. It looks identical to the mouth of the new one. Can they leave their shell or is this some kind of worm?

AFAIK, "snails" are intimately attached to their shells and as they grow, so do their shells. When they die, the body becomes a stinky goo, liquefy and disperse into the water column and leave the shell and "door" behind.

Pick up the shell and have a looksie...stranger things have happened and would like a good head scratcher if that is the case during these interesting times ;)
