a friend of mine just started his own reef tank and has been having a crash..hes not really that patient lol and im steady trying to teach him. He has a purple firefish that has no where to go and asked if i could hold it for him. I know a any kind of firefish need at least 10g but he doesnt have anyone else to take care of it as he redoes his tank. should i tell him to trade it in at a LFS for a credit for now or should i take it in for him and wait for him to resetup

my tank - Fluval Spec V (5.5G) Already has 1 black O. clown (around 1 inch in size) size of a yellow clown goby. i have had him for around a month i think... i have a lid on my tank also. Mixed reef with diy led. also housing a porcelain carb and 3 sexy shirmps. Shirmps are in a breeder box tho, since its eatting coral....atm lol.

So? what do you guys think? will this be pushing it..i hate to think about my tank first before helping but i wouldnt want my tank to crash or be crowded. I'll have to probably keep his tank for 1-2months since he'll be doing a dry rock cycle since he started with Live rock and got pretty bad pest.

my tank is linked below.

do not help until you have QT for this fish. Nothing from the friends should be stored in the display tank, because small fish can wipe out whole tank.

If they are real friends they will understand. If they will be disappointed by your decision, they are not your friends.

I personally, would never ask my best friend to hold fishes in the main tank.

Probably it just me
Never even thought about that. thanks for the insight sig! he currently has it in a bucket with a heater and a small pump in his room, not sure if there is light over it how long can it be in that bucket for? as a QT?

When I moved to my present house, I was going to build a nice sized reef system from the original 35gal. They were in RMT's for 5 years and then I just gave my fish and corals to my clients as my fishy wants were "pushed down the priority list" for a "family life".

I get to see them regularly and have a yellow tang, a coral beauty and a 6-line wrasse that are at least 13year old as well as branching hammer coral that have grown to 6 basket ball sized colonies.

Provided that he cares for the bucket just like he would his Display tank or any other aquarium, it could feasibly live in the bucket forever. They need proper heat and water flow and healthy water, that's it - doesn't matter whether it's in a bucket or not.

Regarding the lack of lights, he can just tell the fish it's been a cloudy few weeks ;) It won't hurt it, fish don't feed using photosynthesis :D

i dont know about the bucket. if you do bucket: heater, piece of live rock and airstone should do, as long is it gets some daylight or perhaps a lamp above will help. That is better than putting him in your 5.5 gallon with a clown. The clown will most likely corner him and kill the fire fish....i wouldnt do it for anything, you'll have a massacre in there. why doesnt he sell the firefish and start over again?
